We're so lucky at Iowa State. I've talked to friends at other universities and they don't have the same type of opportunities. They just go to class and that's all. Here there is so much more to it. We're really lucky to have that at Iowa State.

As a freshman at Iowa State I joined the Advancing Citizenship Together (ACT) Learning Community, which seeks to increase participant's knowledge of political and women's issues and to encourage exploration of career opportunities in public service, public policy, and administration. ACT also provided me with opportunities to meet and interact with women in leadership roles. I met Christie Vilsack, former Iowa First Lady, at an event with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on the Iowa State campus. Joining a learning community was very beneficial because I made connections with faculty and staff.

I had heard about Iowa State all through growing up. It's fun hearing all about the buildings and what's changed, and looking at pictures. My grandma lived on the same floor of Oak [Residence Hall] that I did my freshman year. The academics and the leadership opportunities that are offered at Iowa State drew me here.
