My time at Curtin University has been so enjoyable that I don't really want to graduate and leave. The social scene is buzzing on campus and there are plenty of groups to get involved with. At Curtin, my advice is to frequent the tavern and join the guild - and make the most of the facilities on campus. If you're leaving straight after class and not using the library and resources on campus your not going to get a lot out of the experience.
As an interstate student,I had to fly from NSW to WA to go through an interview process. Despite scoring high in my HSC, the interview is portfolio and personality based and I found the process very easy. Any future students considering an arts course at Uni should strive to have a comprehensive porfolio of their work ready to present and comprehensive understanding of the english language.
I scored a scholarship off my HSC mark at the end of school and most scholarships are awarded for brilliant results in their end of year school exams. However, there are lots of other scholarships available and can be applied for on the University website.
My course is not available at Curtin at the moment as I am taking a very unique direction in my course but the best bit about Bachelor of Fashion (Textile and Fashion Design) has been how creative the course is - it doesn't just focus on making clothes but also stretching the limitations of what fashion and textiles really are. It allows you to explore arts as well as design. The contact hours tend to be between 12-16 hrs depending on the semester but as the course is very hands on you tend to spend almost three to four times that amount of hours doing the work. You need to make the most of the tutors and lecturers during contact time because they aren't available outside of those hours and expect to struggle in the technical aspect of making clothes because not a lot of support is given there. I'd still say the course is value for money however.
The facilities on campus are very comprehensive - the library is invaluable and computer labs are available all over the campus. The Perth scene is probably one of the friendliest in Australia with people laidback and welcoming. Perth has all the perks of a busy city without actually being that busy - good nightlife, beaches, cafes and restraunts. Always something to do. Relatively easy to find part-time work in Hospitality or retail even in the current economic climate and the Guild (Student Union) on campus is pretty economical and suppportive if you choose to join. There are clubs specifically for International Students and an area on campus that allows international students from the same countries to meet one another.
I believe the job prospects have increased as Curtin has an ongoing relationship with fashion and textile experts throughout Australia and a good reputation in terms of pushing students creatively. There is an alumni association and I will definitly be keeping in touch with my fellow alumni.
Located in Western Australia and New South Wales.
