Talk to seniors here before coming. Even when they are only half way thro their undergrad, they will be able to offer you valuable advice. My dept program is great and I like it.
I had to write TOEFL and GRE as a part of my admission process. I went to classes for GRE and prepared for TOEFL on my own. I got help from a consultant for some of my financial stuff. U need a VISA to go outside India on any accord and my visa interview was very simple, they asked me very basic questions and things were very smooth for me. I got tickets through an agent and it was pretty easy for me cause I booked it early in Jet Airways but I realize now that maybe I could have got a better deal. The journey was very smooth. I landed at Buffalo Niagra International airport. The airport is abt 20 mins drive from the university. I was allowed to carry 55kgs and you have to pay for excess baggage. Did not face any immigration issues. The university did not offer any Meet and Greet service but the Indian student association did.
We are offered TAs, SAs and RAs.
I like my dept program. I am really impressed by the profs here but not all of them. Lecture halls, Library, sports facilities are all great.
I am staying at an independent house outside the univ campus. Part time jobs are pretty easy to get here. We live in an Indian dominated area so that way we have good security. Night life is great but not too active outside as in bigger cities. Weather is in the negative extreme during winter and the winters are long. We have an international student society. We celebrate most important festivals and take care of new comers.
The university has a placement cell. And it is pretty difficult for international students right now because of the recession. We have job fairs here with all companies holding stalls in a big hall. Students can meet with the companies they want to. I have not attended any until now so I do not know any further information. There is an alumni society but I do not think they are as good as they can be.
