I would suggest people with good scores to apply to TAMU. It ranks 23rd in the country and thats not for nothing. The TAMU experience is beautiful. The education is priceless.
I had to take GRE and TOEFL tests and I prepared for GRE using Barrons word list and some previous GRE papers, but I did not attend any coaching classes for GRE. I hadnt done any preparation for TOEFL and did not need help from an education counselor. I am on an F1 visa. My Visa experience was pretty good. Couple of score, academics related questions. There were quite a few questions asked about finances. It was neither easy nor difficult. It was okay. It was easy to get tickets to Texas. I used the student fare option. I flew by Jet Airways and Continental Airlines. The Jet experience was amazing. I would try to avoid Continental though. I landed at Easterwood Airport in College Station. It is minutes away from the university. I was allowed to carry 2 check in bags and one hand baggage. I dont remember the weight constraints. My bags were a little heavier than they should have been but I wasnt charged extra at all. I didnt face any immigration issues. It was a cake walk. The India Association at my University makes this arrangements for new students. I had a friend pick me up so I did not sign up for that. My friend met and greeted me of course.
The university offers scholarships, tuition waivers, Graduate Assistantship Teaching, non-teaching.
Program structure is really good I love it. The course duration is 16 months. And all those months are packed with heavy learning. My professors are simply superb. We got experienced professors who make learning competitive and interesting. Classrooms are really good at the university. They are air-conditioned, needless to say. They are spacious and well-lit. We have all equipments for video, audio, presentations, etc. The library is also too good. You find all books ranging from magazines to encyclopedias. They also have a huge digital collection, even movies ;).
I live in an apartment off campus with 3 other Indian girls. This way living expenses are cut down to a great extent. The apartment I lived in was awesome. It was a duplex with central AC. I had no complaints or discomfort whatsoever. Any one who takes one look at the recreation center falls in love with it. It has got badminton, basketball, squash, gym, race track, dance classes, blah. Students are allowed to use all these facilities for free. Very easy to find part time jobs if the students are willing to look hard. There are a lot of events n parties organized by the University itself. Ice cream socials, free Friday night pool, pizza, bowling, etc. There are quite a few bars around the university. These places are buzzing with people all night during weekends. The first negative thing in my entire feedback. The weather here is horrible. The heat and cold are extreme. The rain is merciless when it visits. There are several International student societies. There are many organizations for Indians itself. They arrange for cultural, festival celebrations, etc.
The university has a placement cell called Career Center. The placements are pretty good. It is a challenge for all International students to find job because there are few companies who consider internationals and too many internationals. Students submit their resume on the online portal. Companies review these and select candidates for interviews. There maybe one or many interviews depending on the company. There is an active alumni society at TAMU. Former students help in placements by forwarding any job openings in their company to Advisors who in turn pass it on to the students.
