Get a good GPA in your under-graduation. That will increase your chances of admission and getting assistantship.

I had to take GRE. I prepared on my own for about three-four months, and had a coaching class for one month. I did use services of educational counselors. I needed a VISA. The VISA interview was quick and smooth, for 2 minutes it lasted! It was easy to get tickets to my destination. I flew by American Airlines. It was good. There was no student fare. I landed at Des Moines. It is 40 minutes away from my institution. I dont remember the Baggage rules. Excess baggage was allowed. I did face immigration issues at the port of entry as my finger-prints did not match with their records. But, they verified my identity and let me in. University did send someone at the airport to pick me up.

Am very happy with my program. Profs are very good and distinguished in their fields. Lecture halls are state-of-the art types. Library is big and well-stocked.

I am living in a rented apartment, I did not live in university hostels. We do have full sports and recreation facilities. It is fairly easy for international students to get hold of the part-time jobs in ISU. Social scene is very amiable people are friendly and warm. Night life is somewhat non-existent as this is a very sleepy and small town. Weather is harsh in winters with temperature plunging down to -20 degree Celsius or even lower for three-four months. There is an International Student Society which organizes many trips and events for international students.

Am not aware of placement cells at the university. No idea about job prospects. There is no campus placement process that I am aware of, but there Job fairs on campus.
