I majored in Hospitality Management, which I graduated in during 2005. I come from Sichuan Province, in the South West of China. In 2001, I enrolled with the University of Plymouth to pursue a bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management. The undergraduate programme provided me with a wide range of insights into the hotel sector and more importantly, taught me about the intricacies of being a professional hotelier. I developed several professional interests within the programme - Accommodation Management, Food and Beverage Operation, and Leadership.

The quality of teaching on the programme was great. All the tutors were very professional and helpful. The study environment was good with a huge library, lots of study equipment, and the student accommodation was rather nice too. I had my placement year in 2004 at the prestigious Castle Hotel in Taunton. I worked at the bar, in the restaurant, did sometime in the kitchens (pastry) and also covered reception during my time there. The placement year proved to be invaluable in my search for employment after graduation and needless to say, the stint helped to improve my spoken English. Doing the course helped me to realise that the hospitality trade is where I can excel. I have worked in a Five star hotel for one and a half years now, and I felt that the experience offered me a good opportunity to display my creativity, diligence and to put what I have learnt at university to good use.

Language, Culture shock, lifestyle change were all were challenges I faced when I arrived in Plymouth. It helped that I managed to get work in the Weatherspoons pub in Newton Abbot and later on in the Gog and Magog on the Barbican in Plymouth when I was an undergraduate, The experience not only introduced me to UK's work culture, it also enabled me to improve on my spoken English. The social life in Plymouth is great fun; I used to frequent the pubs, recreation centres and the seaside! The four years in Plymouth were the most unforgettable years of my life. I have learnt that if I do my best, there will be nothing to regret!

I am now working at the Sheraton Jiuzhaigou Resort as a Guest Service Manager in the Front Office. My main responsibility is handling guest complaints. The Sheraton hotel has instigated professional standards and procedures for every position. Associates (including myself) are consistently trained to ensure that we are a good match to a Five star hotel like the Sheraton. It is inevitable that the hotel industry is very competitive, as every major hotel group that is worth their salt is vying to be a world class hotel brand. When I was promoted to the post of Guest Service Manager I obtained a Green Belt on the Six Sigma project* - my goal is to obtain a Masters Black Belt in Six Sigma in the future! I believe that the hospitality industry in China has plenty of room for development and I personally enjoy working in the service trade.
