As a designer, my work is informed by collaboration and dialogue: often the most important aspect of my study is not the subject itself, but the people I work with. That is why my experience as a postgraduate at the College of Fine Arts (COFA), part of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, has been particularly inspiring. COFA has more than 300 international students from 40 different countries. It is this strong international emphasis, combined with Sydney's multicultural mix that makes it an ideal environment for a young designer who has big plans to change people's experience of the world.

Later this year I will participate in COFA's 'Collabor8 Project', an eight-week online initiative that aims to establish a basis for collaborative online arts and design projects between universities in Australia and China. I will form part of a group which will work directly with designers in Shanghai to develop a design intervention. I am specialising in integrated design, and have spent time analysing physical spaces in Sydney and working out how to enhance people's experience of them. I hope one day to bring to India a fusion of eclectic art and design influences gained from my overseas experience, an exciting departure from current Indian design which is mainly influenced by Indian cultural history and European classical design.

I did not just want to study with South Asian students - if I had wanted that I would be back home in India. Here there are so many different nationalities, they bring something to the table which is interesting. I am fascinated by the dialogues and the culture, how people work together in their own often unique ways and still mesh. I have had no problems settling into student life since I arrived in Australia in February. The ease of applying for my course from overseas was matched by the smooth introduction I received on arrival. I easily rented private accommodation near COFA and am now looking for a part time job. Sydney is very happening and very alive. I love the upbeat feel of the city. Everything is changing - it's just about slow enough for me to analyse but not too slow. I never have a reason to question my safety. People are so friendly. Even when I am walking down the street and do not know the route, people offer to help me. In fact I am enjoying my time in Australia so much that I hope to continue to study for a PhD at UNSW and eventually teach design.
