The decision to apply for a place on the Tourism Management degree at the University of Plymouth was relatively easy - tourism is important to the Devon economy, I wanted to stay in Devon to work, and the subject interested me. The course offered a broad grounding in 'business basics' - finance, HR, strategy, marketing and the like. The four years I spent studying for my degree and undertaking my work placement were truly exceptional. Great course, great location and great friends - made for life!

The year of that course that shaped my current working life was my placement year. I didn't really want to go to London, or work for a travel agent or hotel during that year - I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do, until the advert for the role at Dunster Castle (National Trust) in Somerset as 'Assistant Visitor Services Officer' was posted on the notice board. I must have wanted it badly, because I volunteered at Castle Drogo to help with their Easter events - to get some experience and give myself a better chance of getting the role at Dunster! If I'd have known that meant getting soaked to the skin trying to run the Easter Egg Hunt I might have thought otherwise - but that was just a taste of things to come!!

I was offered a place at Dunster with live in accommodation and the princely sum of £60 a month to survive on. The role was challenging and varied, we started in the middle of the summer season and had everything to learn - and quickly, the previous students stayed with us for two weeks and covered, cashing up, banking, post, opening the house, marketing, events planning, conservation tasks, working in the ticket office and recruiting new members. Dunster remains one of my favourite places in the world, and the experiences, skills and knowledge I gained there have been invaluable.
