Its a great experience as apart from the academics you also learn about a lot of other things like living on your own, interacting with people from different walks of life, managing your finances, etc. The whole feeling of being independent is great. It can work positively or negatively depending from person to person. Sometimes food can be a big problem especially for people who are not use to the typical English food and can be a big hassle for vegetarians as they are restricted to a very limited amount to eat and sometimes have no choice at all. I would advice someone coming to my university that he/she is in for a great experience and is going to have a ball for the next 3 years as long as they do not get into trouble with the authorities over issues like attendance, behaviour, etc.
I would not say it was easy but it was not too hard either as i sent in my applications through an agent. I would strongly recommend that students wanting to come abroad especially England should seek assistance from representatives and agents of the universities as they make the whole procedure a 100 times easier. Admission into universities in England are on the basis of your year 12 marks or A levels , so if you have good grades you have nothing to worry about and should get into the university of your choice but it is smart to apply to some universities which are not rated maybe in the top 20 as just in case you mess your exams you always have a backing. Visa process is a pain but my agent made it easier for me, but without an agent it can be a big headache.
I study Business and Management and I really like it because it was the only subject I actually enjoyed studying in school. I have 22 hours of lectures and tutorials in a week. The 9 am lectures are very annoying as I have to walk for 20 mins in the cold half asleep. My course is interesting but it also has subjects which I hate and do not understand like economics. It is a compulsory subject in the first year. But overall the course is value for money. I would advice future applicants that whatever course they do just make sure you do not get into trouble on issues like attendance and non submission of coursework as this can get you into serious trouble. Missing lectures is not a big deal but make sure your up to date with the work. Faculty is the same everywhere I feel, just like in school there are some teachers which I really like and some I cant stand.
Campus facilities are pretty simple. There are a few restaurants, bars and coffee shops. The nearest major city is Bristol, but Exeter has almost everything so it is not a compulsion to go and visit Bristol often. Some of the locals are really nice and some can be very rude, depends on your surroundings. Most interesting things to do are going bar hopping at night and go carting and bowling during the day. There are great restaurants and shops in the area and of course cinema halls so theres lots to do. Accommodation is pretty costly, it works out to be about 3800 pounds for a year and it is best to apply as early possible for accommodation because if you do not you will not get the room of your choice. I made the mistake of applying late and now I live in a room as big as my bathroom back home. Students can also get jobs on campus. There re many societies for international students, for example majority of the Indians and Pakistanis join the Asian society. They organise a lot of events like socials and bollywood nights.
I do believe my job prospects have increased as a result of being in this university as my university comes in the top 10 universities of England. But your grades also are a major factor in the job you get so it is imperative to make sure your doing your best, only the rating of your university does not matter. All students have the option to join an alumni after they graduate and yes I will join it and keep in touch with those close to me.
