I did my Masters at Rochester Institute. It offered a decent program with all the necessary infrastructure. It is a good place for future students to consider.
I had to write GRE, for which I prepared using Barrons and group study. No coaching attended. I Used counselor for VISA Prep. VISA was needed and was granted after a couple of questions regarding the school. VISA was fairly easy to get. Tickets booked via a travel agent. Flew NorthWest Airlines, it was not that great, no student fare offered, landed in Detroit. Had to catch another flight to the final destination and then took a cab to the institution which was 10 minutes from airport. Baggage - 2 bags 32KG each. No immigration issues. Meet and Greet was available but not used by me.
Had $6000 in initial aid and later had Teaching Assistantship which covered tuition and also paid for the services.
I was happy with the program. The professors were excellent. Lecture halls were decent in size with all facilities needed. Library has a big collection of books for both courses and leisure.
I lived in on campus housing which was good with a lot of facilities like Gym, Internet, Phone and easy shuttles to mall and other places. We had excellent facilities including swimming, tennis, racquet ball, basketball, baseball etc. A lot of jobs like notetaker, cafeteria and library were available. Social scene was not that great and we did not have access to night life without a car. Weather was very cold. There was an international student organization which was very active and welcoming.
The University has a career center and regular job fairs. Jobs for international students are more economy dependent rather that school dependent. You can setup mock interviews and get advice in career development and job hunting tactics. You can also setup resume review sessions. You need to work with the International Student Org. to obtain the work permit and the process is well defined and works very smooth. There is a very active alumni network and they are connected to the current students through a web portal and the alumnus are very helpful in job hunt and career advice.
