To anyone thinking of postgraduate study in the UK, I would recommend doing plenty of research first. Find a course which best suits your objectives, whether you want to change or progress your career, and apply as early as possible. Come with lots of enthusiasm, looking forward to learn new things and experiences, and ready to enjoy the British way of life. The UK provides a number of well-ranked universities and a totally interesting and different living experience.

My masters was a straight forward progression from my BSc in Civil Engineering, my previous working experience and my personal interests. I would recommend having atleast 2 years of work experience before taking a postgraduate course. It makes it easier to digest and understand the theory and to take full advantage of the course. I really enjoyed experiencing a different education system. I found it more oriented towards self study and we were encouraged to find answers to problems in a more analytical way. I had excellent lecturers with years of practical experience, which made the lectures more focused on real life problems.

I liked interacting and working with students from different parts of the world, with a culture and way of thinking very different from mine. This is important when you need to work in multicultural teams in a multi national company.

Now I am a project manager for a major multinational engineering consultancy, working in the project management team for the expansion project of Manchester’s tram system (Metrolink).
