I've studied mostly online but this semester I have been at university full time. I've been involved with a few volunteer programs with the university and have made a lot of new friends due to that involvement. My adivice for prospective students is to get involved in as many extracurricular activites as possible to enrich their experience. One worth looking at is the Global Leadership Program which is actually written on your academic transcript on completion, no other university does this.
I entered Macquarie University on the Jubilee Scheme. This allows mature aged students who have not studied at university before to have a chance to apply and be enrolled. I found it quite easy to enter the university on this scheme. I was given a lot of support after I enrol, there were a lot of courses available to help with research, using the library and writing essays. My advice would be know exactly what you want when you apply. You may change paths once you have enrolled but if you show a clear path or direction in the begining you will have a better chance of being accepted.
Macquarie University encourages it's students to go on international exchange, it has a large pool of grants available to help students achieve this goal. I have not had the opportunity to participate yet but friends of mine have and said the experience was fantastic and the financial support was easy to obtain.
My course is quite intensive, learning a second language is not easy. I have to spend at least 2 - 3 hours per day just on the language subjects to keep ahead. There are a lot of new words and grammar points to cover each week plus assignments. The lecturers and tutors in the Japanese department are very supportive, questions are responded to quickly and encouragment, advice and support is given when ever needed. I belive the course is value for money but of course this deppends on how much you are willing to put into it to get out of it.
Macquarie University seems to be going through some very positive changes. It's building a new library and all the classrooms now have modern touch screen boards that are replacing the old white boards. The gymnasium at Macquarie is equal to any fitness centre and there are a range of sporting clubs to get involved in. There are a diverse range of clubs, I've joined the Japanese at Macquarie Club in the past to improve my language skills. The university has a number of usefull facilities near by such as it's own train station, the local buses pass through the university and there is a major shopping centre with an ice rink right across the road. The area is very safe and surrounded by lots of natural bushland.
I hope to move to Japan after my studies. The university offers the Global Leadership Program and encourages international exchange experiences to it's partnered universities. Grants are available to fullfil these experiences. I believe these extra activities and experiences will enhance my degree and improve my job prospects in Japan.
