The Master of Nursing Science was profoundly disappointing. The course was poorly administered, disorganised and under resourced. The teaching was appalling (the worst in my 8 years of tertiary study). Lecturers were uninteresting, factually incorrect and unreasonable in their assessment demands. Written work was difficult to complete, as lecturers gave unclear instructions and then marked pedantically and inconsistently. I feel that I have learnt despite, rather than due to this course.

Gaining entry was no problem- although 50% of students dropped out before the end of the 2 years.

The course was poorly run, to the point where sometimes we didn't know where lectures were to be held, and sometimes no teacher would turn up to a scheduled class. I found the lectures so uninteresting that I generally took a book to read to pass the time, and there were entire subjects where I didn't learn a thing, despite not having a background in health science. It seemed that the course focused on semi-important things, whilst lacking a good grounding in essential sciences (eg. anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology). There was no small group teaching, as the course seemed desperately underresourced. Any attempts at tutorial style were 30-50 students with one or two teachers. Study support was limited, and open antagonism developed between students and staff towards the end of the course. Staff seemed unable to consider student needs.

Despite the poor quality of the course, Melbourne Uni continues to have a good reputation, so this is probably one of the better postgrad nursing courses to take, as being a Melbourne graduate is well respected.
