Singapore is a great place to study in, if you intend to work in SE Asia. Chose your place of study in the country you are happy to work in.
I wrote the GRE. Did my preparation studying Kaplan and Barrons. I didnt attend any coaching classes neither did I use any counselor. I needed a US Visa for the stint at Stanford. Was asked questions about my financial background, nature of the program, my future plans etc. in the interview. As I had a scholarship to study and the second half of the course was in Singapore, I think the US visa interview was quite straight forward and simple. For Singapore, we had an invitational letter from NTU, so again Visa process was very simple. I flew Air India to US and back. Was quite ok. I did not get a student fare. Stanford university had arranged pick up at SF airport. At Singapore, I had to make my own arrangement from Airport to college. To the US, we were allowed around 60 kgs of luggage. That was quite generous. To Singapore I think it was just around 35. I didnt face any issue at the port of entry at either of the countries.
Due to the sponsorship from PUB, I had full tuition fee waiver as well as a stipend.
The MSc program was sponsored by the Public Utilities Board (PUB) in Singapore. Hence, most of the courses were designed to PUBs needs. I would have personally liked a few more choices with the subjects.
I lived on campus at both universities. In the US, it was a full fledged apartment with kitchen and bathrooms included. In Singapore, there was non kitchen. Lecture halls, libraries and sports facilities were all easy to access and quite impressive. I didnt have to look for a part time job, but I dont think it is easy to get one in Singapore, and if you do get one, I believe there are restrictions on how much you can work. The social scene in Singapore is not too bad, but I feel it is quite segregated with respect to your country of origin. i.e., locals, Caucasians, Indians, other Asians etc., hang out separately. There was an international students society at NTU. They organized a few cultural events and tours around Singapore.
The university does organize placement fairs, but not much actual recruitment happens at these fairs. Most often, it is just a place to get to know names of companies and understand what they do. All the effort and initiative to get a job has to taken by the student. Get a work permit is not too tough, but convincing a company to hire you as a fresh graduate without a work permit or PR is tougher. There is an alumni society at NTU. They probably provide support and funds to the university at a higher level. When it comes to getting individual students jobs, it is your personal contact with people who have graduated from the same program a few years before you that helps the most.
