I began looking for an MBA course in 2003 and having assessed the options I elected to attend the University of Exeter MBA course due to the quality of lecturers and the accreditation from AMBA. The accreditation was very important as I felt it gave me almost a guarantee as to the quality of the product. One additional benefit in doing the MBA was that I was able to gain continuing professional development credits from my professional organization, the Chartered Institute of Marketing. The credits have enabled me to be awarded "Chartered Marketer" status, which helps demonstrate ongoing professional commitment and competency. It is often said that completing an MBA is a catalyst for change. In my case this has been no exception.
Upon reflection I sought to do an MBA for two reasons. Firstly, it can offer diversification. For specialists well versed in the skill sets and knowledge of their core competency the course expands the skills sets necessary for an individual to be more employable in general management. The MBA encourages students/participants to think outside the box and view issues from a wider perspective. In addition, my own experience of the course as a part-timer presented the opportunity to meet others in similar positions as myself. Consequently, peer-group learning was a fundamental element of the course which added significant value to the entire learning experience. My second reason was related to my own particular job at the time. When I embarked upon the course I was working in the financial services sector. Operating at board level in such a complex and highly regulated industry demanded an in-depth comprehension of finance and economics. The Exeter MBA with its close alignment with Xfi and with first class faculty provided exactly what I required. The knowledge I gained improved my understanding professionalism and performance. The Exeter MBA course gave me greater insight into problem solving and further developed my ability to see the bigger picture. Although my most recent experience has been within financial services, the MBA has helped me consolidate my previous experience in manufacturing, service and business-to-business marketing, both in the UK and overseas. As a consequence, I am able to offer my consultancy services across a wide range of industries and deal with varied business issues. My particular research interest is in word-of-mouth marketing which can offer lower customer acquisition costs when compared with more traditional promotional techniques.
I have my own thriving consultancy business, Strategic Matters (UK) Ltd. where I provide corporate coaching - helping firms develop and implement their strategic plans. I also advise on branding, marketing and business development.
