Monash University has a politically and socially active culture; this I think has helped many students either build on their previous interests/curiosities, or has expanded options for many others.
Admissions was through VTAC - the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre, the institution overseeing applications and admissions to all tertiary education in the state of Victoria. With regards to contacting the faculty of Medicine at Monash itself, you could reach a person to speak to pretty much everytime you rang. Email responses are also very prompt. The staff are always very willing to help. Dealing with Student Services - calling can be a bit of a trial, as the waiting times can be a bit long.
Monash medical undergraduate course consists of 2 years pre-clinical (campus-based lectures, tutorials), and 3 years clinical (in-hospital learning, supplemented with tutorials and online modules). In my personal view, Monash University offers a good undergraduate medical course. They emphasise self-directed learning, which can be difficult to grasp in the earlier years. However, the learning objectives are clearer than some other medical courses with the same approach. Tutors are always helpful with advice and direction. There is also emphasis on professionalism, wider social awareness in the context of medical practice, as well as public health. Some students are of the opinion that Monash is too heavy handed in these "lateral" areas, particularly in the pre-clinical years. However, other students thrive in this aspect of health care. Finding the balance is up to students' feedback to the faculty, and also the students' own prioritisation. Monash also offers a postgraduate medical course.
Monash University, again, fosters a culture of students who are socially aware, and active in engaging in extra-curricular activities. There are several clubs and societies, spanning from sports to politics to culture to humanitarian to leisure. The way clubs and societies are run on campus, and the variety of clubs that have managed to stay viable, have varied since the introduction of VSU - Voluntary Student Unionism - a new federal legislation that stopped universities incorporating an added amount to student fees, which the university used to fund clubs and societies. Students now may pay more for joining a club/society, or certain events cost more. However, this means fees have decreased across the board. Since many smaller clubs survived on this funding, they have become non-sustainable and as a result are no longer running. Technological facilities are modern and constantly being updated.
There is a Monash alumni association.
