My advice to students - it's pretty hard here for the first semester, but if they are willing to fight it out, it's a good place to be in (lots of winter sports).
Visa interview experience was a relatively smooth experience - the Visa officer asked for my education loan documents and asked a couple of questions about my field of study. I got my visa in 2 days. I took the GRE and TOEFL in order to apply for my MS. I did not attend any coaching classes or take any counseling. I prepared at home using Barron's GRE material, "Big book" for GRE, material provided by Powerprep, the organization which administers the GRE. I traveled in Spring, so tickets were more expensive than those in the Aug-Sep time frame. I traveled by Air India. The airline was mediocre at best, with flights getting delayed at every airport. Air India allowed 1 extra bag (23 x 3) for students traveling for the first time. Picking up new students is usually organized by seniors at the university. I was offered accommodation with seniors for two weeks before I moved into my own apartment.
The Electrical Engineering department does not offer assistantship (except in a few cases) for masters students. So I had to look for jobs outside the department.
Yes I am happy with the way the program is structured.
I live in an off-campus apartment with roommates. The university does not offer accommodation for grad students. The lecture halls, library and sports facilities are very good. It is pretty hard to find a part-time job, but other departments are open to students who are not from the same department, unlike some other universities. Not interested in city life. Hot summers and cold winters - weather isn't one of the selling points of Minneapolis. There is an active Indian Student Society. It organizes socials for popular Indian festivals like Holi, Diwali, Dussera.
The university has a career counseling center which coordinates interviews between the students and the companies. Interviews are usually conducted a day after the career fair, which takes place at the beginning of every semester, much like other schools in the US. The alumni are very helpful to us, especially in Electrical Engineering. Many companies are not ready to travel to the Midwest from California, and they do their hiring from local schools around the bay area. Companies which have alumni from UMN come to the career fairs every year, which is a boon for the students here.
