CMU was completely different from my UG college in India. The system in the US was more oriented towards understanding the concepts than grades. The atmosphere was very competitive and healthy, which made my experience worthwhile at CMU.
CMU is always tough to get into. I applied online after giving the GRE and TOEFL tests. The visa process went well for me. I suggest students contact seniors and read online forums for more information about colleges and departments. Also check the US news ranking for acceptance rates etc.
There is a scholarship for MS students which are about 40% tuition waiver.
The credit system in CMU is quite different from other universities. I had to take 4 courses per semester and did 48 credits in a semester. This meant I had to spend on an average 48 hrs on the courses which includes lecture hours also. This was pretty intensive so I could not do part time jobs. The learning experience was truly worth the money spent. The facilities are good at CMU which has a huge library, multimedia classrooms etc.
The facilities as I mentioned are awesome. There is a huge football stadium where we play all sports and have fun. The student union is very active and they have happy hours almost every weekend where we party and have fun together.
I have graduated and now I am doing an intern with a company in the US. The job prospects are improving.
