The research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was similar to my field of interest and I found the PhD program highly beneficial to me. This would be an issue which I would advise all Indian students to consider. Apply to institutions which are engaged in research similar to your background.
I was awarded the Research Assistantship and Teaching Assistantship by the university. Further, I was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, Department of Computer Science, UIUC, for the years 2002, 2003 and 2004.
My interests include Operating Systems, Reliability and Security. My PhD program was in Building a Reliable Operating System. I had the good fortune to work under Professor Roy H. Campbell who had published extensively and was a highly motivated and talented person.
Apart from working on my my PhD thesis I also had the opportunity to complete various Summer internship programs at DoCoMo Research, NEC Research, Amazon.com, IBM Research, etc. I worked on different projects and gained a lot of experience and expertise. I had also worked as a Research Assistant and a Teaching Assistant while at the university.
I currently work as a Software Engineer for the product Windows Azure. I work with the team responsible for the operating system and hypervisor that enable Microsofts cloud computing platform. My job is to drive cutting-edge performance and scalability while being mindful of power consumption.
