Students who are hard-working, determined, having strong foundation and interested in research can come here and enjoy!!
I wrote GRE and TOEFL for applying to universities in USA. I used Barrons and Kaplan Material (Book and Tests CD) for both the tests. POWERPREP CDs sent by ETS were also helpful for practicing the tests. I took coaching at VISU Consultancy but not at all useful. I would prefer self-preparation rather than joining at a coaching center. I just followed my advice from my friends already staying in USA and also did some research in I20 Fever Organization and Edulix Community online and selected the universities for applications. I needed a F-1 VISA. My interview lasted 1 minute!! The lady interviewer asked me for my credentials and also about my job experience. I booked tickets to India very late and was highly charged by some agent. So, plan early starting from the application procedure which would reduce your expenses later. I landed at Phoenix Airport at a distance of 4-5 miles from the university. Baggage Rules and Excessive Baggage will be mentioned in your respective airlines. I had no issues at the Port of Entry. Due to some miscommunication, our association could not pick me up at the university. Generally, they would help you out with everything. So contact them as soon as you choose your university.
The funding scenario is too tough to get into. To get a A grade, the student has to put his best efforts, otherwise maintaining a good GPA becomes difficult sem after sem.
My program is Mixed Signal Circuit Design which is structured properly. But the student has to very properly plan ahead what he is going to take in each semester till his last semester as there are some courses which require official prerequisite and must be taken a semester before if the university is offering it in the next semester. The department has good professors and it is research-oriented program rather than industrial one.
I live with 4 other guys in an private apartment very near to the university not provided by them. The infrastructure (Lecture halls, food courts, Recreation complex, Computing Centers, Libraries) are of high quality. One must utilize them properly to take full advantage of your specialization. Getting a part time job here is not so difficult if you keep on applying to jobs. But at this time of crisis, situation is too bad. There is a International Student Association which is active all the time with some or other event happening in the campus.
Career Fairs happen once or twice a semester and few companies will be accepting resumes from International Companies. I have no idea about the Alumni Network here.
