Lamar University is located in Beaumont, Texas. I completed my course in 2005; I studied CS. Lamar University is part of the Texas state university system. The university is predominantly famous for its bachelors degrees though its masters and doctoral degrees and gaining recognition too. It has the small university feel but there are a lot of advantages to that like a good staff- student ratio and a very friendly culture.but dont expect too much from it. people come here because they get funds in this university. as far as computer science dept in lamar is concerned it is quite good as compared to others dept in lamar. they really make people work hard and be prepared for it if u are planning to come here. professors are ok here. operating systems and computer networks are some of the courses which are good over here but it again depends which prof u are taking these courses under. u can get all these information related to research activities in lamar university.
I had a very decent GRE score The Visa interview was hardly anything. The gentleman at the consulate hardly asked me 3-4 questions and I was accepted. Back then yahoo groups was a very famous networking tool and I used it extensively to reach out to a number of other students.
I had a $1000 scholarship and an out state tuition waiver. There are a number of scholarships available but students have to apply for these early.TA/RA depends upon ur grads in the first semester. in the first semester u can not get TA/RA only on the basis of ur GRE score or ur previous work experiences.
Like I mentioned before the staff student ratio is very good. Most professors would know you by name. That has two advantages, firstly it enriches the learning experience secondly it also helps in terms of networking for jobs as they would have contacts in the industry.
Getting on-campus jobs are tough here as i said that university is small and no of students(desi) are huge. but it does not make any difficulty if ur approach for getting on-campus job is right. and if u have waiver and school then it is really easy to earn ur fee and monthly expenses through on-campus job.
When I studied there was no placement through the university itself. but people are getting jobs after passing out from lamar specially from comp science dept. again getting job depends upon the knowledge that u acquire through out ur MS. it makes very little difference if u pass out from some other university a little better than lamar. ultimately it is ur knowledge which will help u in getting jobs..if u are in top 50 ranked university only after that university makes any difference.
