I am a first-year graduate student in the Library and Information Science School Media Program. So far, I have really enjoyed my experience here at Syracuse. The campus is beautiful, and I feel very welcome.

The application process was pretty average based on my applications to other universities. I completed my application online. I had a few problems with the website, but I was eventually able to work them out. The iSchool was very open to questions during the process, so I felt comfortable. My advice to future students would be to start early and to ask many questions. At first, I was nervous to ask questions for fear of sounding inept, but I found that no question is a bad question. The iSchool has an open line of communication.

The iSchool at Syracuse offers many scholarship opportunities if you apply before the February 1st deadline. The different scholarship opportunities are listed on the website, but the application will also ask if you are open to fellowships and other opportunities. My advice for other Library and Information Science students is to also apply for the ALA awards. The iSchool here also offered a Faculty Assistant program that has helped fund my studies.

I have enjoyed most of my courses so far. All of the courses in the School Media program are online. At first I found this to be a little off-putting, but as I got used to it I began to like them. The professors are usually available in many different ways (Skype, Email, etc.). They definitely require a lot of self-management, however. The program can be completed as a distance student with only a few residencies here on campus.

The Syracuse University campus has a lot of resources for students and the surrounding city is large. There are many restaurants and stores around, as well as bars. Generally, I have found most local people to be pretty friendly to students. There are some opportunities for part-time work. I live on the South Campus where there are apartments for upperclassmen or graduate students and I have found a lot to do just in this area. There is a free ice skating rink and a great gym within walking distance. Syracuse also runs buses that are very convenient for moving to and from the main campus. There are many opportunities for clubs and extracurricular activities.

Because I have attended the prestigious Syracuse University School of Information Studies, I think that my job prospects are great. The education offered here is top-notch and the alumni network is vast. They can get you in touch with alumni in many places across the country and in the world to help you network. I feel very confident about finding a job when I graduate.
