Be self-directed! That said, there is tons of support available if you seek it out.
The department is very international in its research focus, though not necessarily in its composition. Most of the "international" students have double citizenship (including US). Though the department is happy to accept international students, if you do not have US citizenship, it may be difficult to get funding.
Warning: If you do not have US citizenship, it may be difficult to get funding.
The faculty and students are incredible from an intellectual point of view. Collaboration among grad students is high. Emphasis on professionalization is lacking.
The Bay Area is realllllllly nice, though it can get expensive! Most graduate students are able to get by, though we all complain about how poor we are.
We're known as some of the best/brightest grad students out there, so job prospects can't be much better coming from anywhere else.
