I took GRE and TOEFL exams as a part of the mandatory admission process. I prepared on my own however I took mock tests from Jamboree, New Delhi. I did not hire a counselor. I did need a VISA and the interview very simple and straightforward. It was easy to get tickets. I flew by Air India. The airline was pretty good. They served Indian curries. I was offered students fare. I landed at Chicago O Hare which was quite close to the university. There was no Meet and Greet service at the airport.
We have all kind of scholarship. I had one.
I am pretty happy with the program. The professors are awesome. Lecture halls are clean, big and well equipped. UChicago library was excellent beyond compare.
For my year in Chicago, I lived in an international dorm for graduate students. It was wonderful to live in a place and socialize with people from all over the world but of course I barely had time for it. The rooms were small but fairly comfortable, no complaints about the bathrooms but the common kitchen was dirty and the cafeteria very basic. Very good sports facility at Uchicago. I had a part time too. It is fairly easy. We never ventured out late, as the area where the university was just wasnt safe in the dark. Weather can be really nice in the summer but the winters can get really cold and depressing.
I dont know about placement cell, as I never used it. The economic situation is not very good! There is an alumni society and they send a lot of mails. I think they help with placements. I dont know anything about work permit yet!
