I am enjoying the dynamic and challenging experience of university. It drives me forward to develop my personal skills, knowledge and confidence. The most important advice I would give to someone considering studying at the University of Adelaide is to do read about the university, and the city itself, and ask themselves how both of those would suit them and propel them into their future careers.
It was not difficult attaining a place at my university if you had the required standard of grades. I followed the process of sitting for exams at the end of my last year of high school in Adelaide, and being given a Tertiary Entrance Rank. To make your admissions process easier, I would recommend researching the process you will follow to apply diligently, then applying quite early, so as to sort out any issues that may arise.
Many scholarships and funding opportunities are available, and can be accessed through the website of the University of Adelaide. You must make sure you have researched where you will stay when studying and prepared a budget, then made sure your funds and/or any scholarships you have been awarded will sufficiently cover the cost of these.
My course is challenging and quite diverse, as I study the creative side of architecture and on the other hand the analytical and precise side of engineering. The best bits are the oppurtunities I get to work on assignments and tasks that relate directly to real life situtations, such as dissassembling an engine to discover exactly how every part functions. I have a total of 15 contact hours per week, with another 15-30 studying depending on the work load. The lecturers are clear and follow a very logical path, whatever the subject. Tutors know exactly what they are doing, having been teaching the same subject to quite a few students over the years. Extra support is provided, such as a mathematics learning centre, where you can ask for help on any level maths, and extra support for writing in English. My course is excellent value for money in my opinion.
The university facilities are clean, modern and user friendly, with a definite enjoyable asthetic. I thouroughly enjoy Adelaide, and the fact that the university is right next to the central business district, offering access to any sort of thing you may require. The locals are very open and friendly, and my fellow students even more so, always willing to help out with work or more personal issues if you simply ask. I live in Adelaide, and the accomodation in the suburbs outside the CBD is very good value for money. Part time work is widely available, so much so as to give u some freedom as to what type of work you'd like to do, i.e. retail, fast food and others. The student union is excellent.
My job prospects have increased immensely as a result of my studies. I will be keeping in touch with fellow alumni.
