My advice to fellow students would be to follow the good old way of being sincere, develop programming skills, and be in sync with the technology. Generally speaking students should try and match up research interests in accordance with the subject, Professors in order to obtain funding, be prepared to work hard.
I would say it was not very difficult as I had a good grades in undergraduate (IIT B.H.U), Work experience, recommendations although my GRE score was low. I think Universities lay emphasis on overall performance rather than focusing only on GRE scores. Lot of agencies help in the application process, my visa interview was good (very general) and I flew directly by Indian Airlines to Newyork and then took a bus.
I have an RA (Research Assistantship).
I am a non option student that is I donot need to take any compulsory courses, I can pick courses on my own will ,which helps me pursue only those that I really want to do rather than focusing on ones that have to be taken just for course sake. Personally I love this as it helps me knowing various fields and does not bind me to any field. Facilities, tutors, are all above expectations.
My first and foremost requirements were food obviously Indian and I was happy places here (grocery stores) had that, secondly I was funded by the university so I could concentrate on my studies without worrying much about tuition fees and expenses. My grades are good and I want to keep up the good work. We have an ISS DEPARTMENT IN OUR UNIVERSITY(International student Services) which helps us through everthing right from getting SSN(SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER) to driving licenses ,organizing international coffee hours where people come and interact. They act as an interface amongst different internationals. I personally like this as something like this was never there in my previous university. My department, faculty ,colleagues are all very friendly, helpful and I owe them for my good showing. Nearest city is Pittsburgh, I love watching movies, hanging out with friends, cooking. I share an apartment hence my rent is not that high (400$/month).We have an Indian organization which keeps with basically everything and we too participate actively in that.
Let me say that in as simple way If I was earning 4 lakhs/annum after my undergraduate degree I will be definitely doing much more after another degree and also my marketability as an individual would be greater not to talk about overall knowledge gain in the process. Campus recruitments have been down due to obvious reasons especially for international students, but all we can hope is by the time we graduate things become better. I mean placements were good but since recession things have been difficult.
