Overview

Overview

Lincoln University College (LUC) was founded in 2002 as Lincoln College and later upgraded to university college status in 2011. Located in Petaling Jaya, one of the most exciting cities in Southeast Asia, LUC is a great place to study with an impressive reputation for teaching quality and academic excellence, and overall, an ideal learning experience.

There are over 100 courses on offer across the foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study, and tutors and lecturers at LUC are some of the best in Malaysia. From engineering to social sciences, students can always learn up-to-date information about their industry from talented teachers, and leave the university fully prepared for their professional career. Some of the most popular and well-respected courses are in nursing, dentistry, science and computer science.

Though it was only founded in the 2000s, LUC has already been able to build strong connections with national and international employers. Graduate outcomes and job prospects continue to improve each academic year, and students have access to a range of work-study opportunities, research facilities and career services.

LUC is in the west of the Kuala Lumpur federal territory, so there’s always something for students to do or see. The environment is busy and diverse, and people from all backgrounds can find something to love. About 40 per cent of people currently enrolled at LUC are international, and the institution welcomes applicants from across the globe.

The language of teaching is English, and there are some highly rated English support programmes available to students who don’t speak it as a first language. There are also lots of scholarships open to domestic and international students, and the university awards some great research grants to postgraduate students to help fund and support their projects, which make important positive changes to society across many different industries.

LUC puts a special focus on its Sustainable Development Goals with everything it does, and students who care about the future of the planet will really appreciate this about their university (almost as much as they appreciate the high-quality teaching and the amazing Malaysian student life experience).

Teaching Quality

The teaching quality at LUC is fantastic. It’s currently ranked in the top 300 universities in Asia by QS Rankings, and the Times Higher Education University Rankings name it the ninth best institution in Malaysia. These rankings are ever more impressive when applicants remember that LUC was only founded in 2002, and they clearly show the high-quality teaching standard offered across all programmes and courses.

Education at LUC is student-focused, creative and professional. Quality teaching is supported by lots of helpful resources. LUC faculty believe that all students, domestic and international, have the right to an amazing education. An education that doesn’t just give them information but also prepares them for their professional future and improves their career prospects before they reach the point of graduation.

The university has ISO certification and has been awarded the World University Impact Ranking certificate. That means that the LUC learning experience creates impactful, successful graduates who go on to important careers and jobs in Asia and around the world.

Some LUC academics have won famous and nationally recognised awards in Malaysia for their teaching work and research efforts. In 2022, for example, Pro-Chancellor and professor Hjh Bibi Florina Abdullah won the Outstanding Women Award for her commitment to LUC’s students (and their educational experiences).

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for LUC depend on the course the student is applying for, and what country they’re from. Students are advised that they should always check the specific course pages to find out what the university entry requirements are.

The university accepts various international qualifications, including GCE and A Level scores. There are particular qualifications that students from some countries should be aware of. For example, any student from Thailand applying for a foundation programme must have achieved a successful Matayom Five qualification.

Recognised postgraduate university qualification requirements also change depending on the course. For example, a student applying for a doctoral degree in applied sciences will need a master’s degree in science, medical science or related study areas.

There are several options for students applying to study for an engineering master's degree. They must have a bachelor’s degree in a related field with a minimum CGPA score of 2.75 or equivalent, but if they don’t meet that requirement straight away, they can take internal tests or be accepted based on their working experience.

Whatever level of study they’re applying for, help is always on hand for international students struggling with the application process and university requirements. Plus, individual course requirements are all clearly listed and available on the LUC website, so students can do all the research they need to before applying for student admission.

English Score Required

The language of teaching at LUC is English. Therefore, all international students need to show a certain level of English language ability in order to gain entry. There are general requirements, as well as course-specific requirements, that students should be aware of.

The general International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band score for students applying to undergraduate and foundation programmes is at least 4.5 (or 5 in some cases, like the master’s degree in engineering). Other testing methods are also recognised by the university to show English proficiency, like the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the PTE (Pearson Test of English), but the IELTS is one of the most common.

For some courses, if students don’t meet the required English language skills at the point of applying then they can take part in one of the support courses offered by the university. This will allow them to achieve the score required for entry to the course. This is usually carried out through an assessment process.

Admission

The first step in the admission process for international students is to apply for their course via the LUC website application form. Firstly, they will need to confirm that they are an international student, and then they will need to confirm that they are a prospective student. There are also lots of supporting documents that international students are required to provide for university admission, though some of them only apply to applicants from certain countries:

  • A full valid passport (including the blank pages for Libya, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen)
  • A scan of passport pages one and two and a scan of the last page submitted separately
  • All academic transcripts and certificates (including a letter from the applicant’s previous school confirming that they have studied in English, if applicable)
  • Evidence of language proficiency (if required)
  • A completed Health Assessment Form (supplied by the university)
  • An Attestation Form
  • A Scratch Card (only Nigerian students)
  • An affidavit (if the passport and academic achievements don’t match)
  • A Bank slip of the visa processing fees after a student receives their letter of offer

All students must sign and submit their own applications. They have to press the Submit button. All supplied documents need to be original copies unless otherwise indicated. Student admission can be denied based on failure to follow these instructions or provide the right supporting documents.

All international students also need a student visa to come to university in Malaysia. Once they’ve been accepted to LUC, they can apply for one via their local Malaysian embassy. There, they will be given all the important information about the application process, and they will sit for an interview with an embassy officer covering why they need the visa.

Scholarships & Funding

LUC offers various university scholarships and research grants to its international students. Future students can apply for scholarships via each individual course page after they’ve been accepted, and applicants from all countries are eligible if they meet the other requirements (like academic excellence).

Some LUC scholarships cover up to 80 per cent of the cost of tuition fees, massively reducing the amount of funding that a student has to cover individually. These scholarships are generally awarded to students who achieve great academic results and show strong moral character and leadership qualities, positively impacting their communities.

Some scholarships are offered through the Malaysian government’s Ministry of Higher Education, like the Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS) for international master’s and doctoral students. There’s also the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme, started in 1980 and awarded to international students from the developing world who want to study in Malaysia and bring those skills back to their home countries to help.

Beyond scholarships, there are also lots of postgraduate research grants available to students. These are usually offered in partnership with other institutions. Taking science and technology students as an example, the Club300 Foundation for Bird Protection awards annual grants of up to USD 5,000 to projects connected to bird protection and conversation.

University Structure

LUC is made up of 11 faculties, each of them teaching a range of pre-university foundation courses, undergraduate programmes and postgraduate programmes. LUC has one campus in Petaling Jaya, an exciting city that gives students plenty of educational and extracurricular opportunities. LUC also offers some American transfer degree programmes. All programmes and courses are organised across the faculties, which are as follows:

  • The Faculty of American Degree Transfer Programmes
  • The Faculty of Applied Science
  • The Faculty of Business and Accounting
  • The Faculty of Computer Science and Multimedia
  • The Faculty of Dentistry
  • The Faculty of Engineering
  • The Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism
  • The Faculty of Medicine
  • The Faculty of Nursing
  • The Faculty of Pharmacy
  • The Faculty of Social Science, Arts and Humanities

The Faculty of Applied Science allows students to work together with classmates and academics in a brilliant environment. The research projects students can work on in this field are aimed at helping and contributing to the worldwide scientific community, including the biggest global change issues like sustainability and climate change.

Research areas in the Faculty of Computer Science and Multimedia include programming, software design and hardware design, and there are excellent computing facilities on offer, as well as opportunities to work with famous, high-achieving researchers in the field.

In the Faculty of Social Science, Arts and Humanities, students carry out research projects that, like projects in the Faculty of Applied Science, will benefit Malaysia’s national community and the rest of the world. Creating a more sustainable future is a huge interdisciplinary focus at LUC.

Facilities

There are numerous great academic resources and facilities available to students at LUC. Its libraries, computer stations and reading areas are some of the best in Petaling Jaya, but the city also has lots of student recreation centres, student life centres and social spaces for relaxing and exciting breaks between study sessions and classes.

LUC’s lecture theatres and research rooms are amazing, and the Student Information Kiosk can help international students with any on-campus enquiries. The Lincoln Learning System is a great resource, and the Koha Library System lets students easily borrow, return and renew physical resources for research (books, magazines, newspapers and journals). The Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), increases each student’s ability to get involved with research projects.

The campus has student lockers and 24-hour CCTV in operation. It’s a safe and secure student activity centre where people from any background can feel at home together. There are food and drink options, study spaces and student lounges. There are also various accommodation options for international students.

Accommodation

University accommodation for international students at LUC is usually offered in the form of apartment-style student houses just five minutes from the campus, with a bus stop at Kelana Jaya LRT and public transport links across the city. All apartments are fully furnished with other basic living amenities included, like kitchen and laundry facilities. Students can choose between private single rooms, twin rooms and triple rooms.

Hostel accommodation at LUC costs RM 700 monthly for a single room and RM 500 monthly for a twin sharing room. All students staying in hostel accommodation have access to a communal swimming pool, gym and tennis courts. They should pay their rent on the first of each month and must also pay a refundable deposit of one month’s rent before moving in.

There’s also accommodation available off-campus in Petaling Jaya. This is a beautiful city, and the accommodation is in an exciting student area surrounded by shopping centres, cafés, restaurants and other things to see and do.

Student Support

LUC is an institution that cares a lot about student wellbeing. Student services on offer to domestic and international students are very high quality, created to make sure every student question has a qualified answer. There’s academic assistance. There’s career development help. There’s physical health advice and care. There are mental health student support options. There’s nothing LUC won’t do to give its students a full student support programme and meet all their needs.

The Lincoln Learning System is a hugely useful digital resource, giving students direct and individual services, information and resources. All students need to do is log in, and they’ll get access to student guides, educational documents, event invites and more. Using the Lincoln Learning System, students can stay connected to what’s happening at LUC from anywhere in the world.

Full contact information is provided for students no matter what their concerns or issues might be. Whether they’re looking for feedback or want to discuss specific requirements, they can voice their worries and feelings whenever they need to. There’s a Counselling Centre and an International Student Office, as well as advisors who are always ready to hear (and meet) students’ accessibility needs and disability requirements.

Without student support services, a university student could not succeed. They wouldn’t feel happy and supported when they had a problem, and this would mean they would soon lose interest in their studies. LUC understand this, and it works very hard to make every student heard in and out of the classroom. Faculty members and support staff connect with LUC students at every opportunity, checking in and creating trusted faces to turn to with issues.

Graduate Outcomes

LUC has a very good reputation with employers, and it’s been improving its graduate outcomes and job prospects a lot in the past few years. The QS World University Rankings 2023 give LUC an Academic Reputation score of 62.9 per cent and an Employer Reputation score of 55 per cent. If students want to improve the local community/the communities in their home countries, LUC’s practical, flexible courses are a great place to start.

Plus, the institution is developing important links with innovative companies in Kuala Lumpur, expanding career options and graduate opportunities for students with each passing year. Many go on to work for these companies, building full lives for themselves in beautiful Malaysia and finding a lot of professional success. But this isn’t just down to LUC’s links with the companies, it’s also thanks to the career services and employability workshops that prepare students so well for the world of work.

LUC was only founded in 2002, but its global reputation has been growing quickly. The Ministry of Education in Malaysia has given it a five-star rating, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that graduates from LUC are great additions to the team in industries and businesses all over the world.

Employability services at LUC are mainly managed through the Careers Services Department and the Professional Development Academy. The academy offers a range of professional training courses in partnership with LUC to help students develop skills that will be essential in the workplace, while the Careers Services Department provides:

  • CV review sessions
  • One-to-ones with qualified career guides
  • Job adverts and job-hunting advice
  • Interview preparation workshops
  • CV/resume writing workshops
  • Career fairs
  • Alumni networking events
  • Employer networking events

Located in one of Asia’s most exciting cities, the career opportunities for LUC graduates never seem to end. It’s a great option for any aspiring student, but especially for an aspiring student who wants to attend a fast-growing Asian university and benefit from really strong career outcomes on the other side of their degree. LUC is named one of the best options in Malaysia for a reason, and most alumni see that reason very clearly.
