James Cook University is Australia’s leading tropical research university and is amongst the top 5% of universities worldwide for research excellence in the following fields: marine biology, sustainable tourism, disaster management, tropical diseases, health, rainforest ecology, remote and indigenous health, geology and environment.
The University’s tropical focus underpins its research mission, which has two complementary themes reflecting the University’s tropical and regional location. Our research and research training is concentrated on issues of global significance to industries and communities in the tropics. This focus is complemented by a commitment to the delivery of research benefits to the northern Queensland community. JCU is committed to research excellence by alignment to four major themes:

The Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) is an Australian Government funded initiative aimed at boosting world-class research and turning Australia’s scientific innovations into successful new products, services and technologies, an – in turn – making industries more efficient, productive and competitive.
JCU is a participant in eight CRCs and also plays an important parting the first Commonwealth Environment Research Faciltiy (CERF): the Marine and Tropical Sciences Research Facility (MTSRF).
