Campus Life
Social life at the campus: The University is home to one of the country’s largest Students’ Unions (USSU), which has a range of facilities for recreation, sports, arts and welfare, as well as bars, food outlets and a nightclub. The main union area also plays host to weekly market stalls, exhibitions, meetings and, in the evenings, a variety of themed club events. The USSU also offers a huge variety of clubs and societies including around 25 international and religious societies and special interest groups run by the students for the students. The campus plays host to a spectrum of social events including a thriving mix of music, theatre, art, film, dance, public lectures and special events taking place in its bars, cafés and dedicated performance spaces.
A number of international focussed events take place annually on campus including the well attended iFestival; a celebration of entertainment, culture and traditions from around the world, and Chinese New Year celebrations.
The University also has plans for a new unique multi-faith centre which will offer 6 distinct spaces for world faith communities within a single building.
Sports: The University’s Surrey Sports Park provides world-class sports, dance and exercise facilities. It was designed according to strict eco-friendly guidelines, and includes a 50m pool, multipurpose sports hall, 120-station gym, indoor climbing centre, grass and 3G artificial sports pitches, a natural ‘trim trail’, squash courts and a café bar for socialising.
The Surrey Sports Park is one of the best contemporary university sports facilities anywhere in Europe. As well as providing an extensive programme of sports, dance and exercise for students, staff and the community, it is also home to elite sports teams.
Library: The University Library contains over 400,000 books, with computer laboratories open 24 hours per day, seven days per week. It is the home of SPLASH (the Student Personal Learning And Study Hub), an innovative centre that provides workshops, drop-in sessions, appointments and online resources to help students develop their learning, study and presentation skills.
The brand new Learning Centre extension is a major initiative which has brought benefits such as a 30 percent increase in work spaces, significant increase in the number of PCs, additional wireless capacity for use of laptops and an enlarged informal learning café zone.
Learning Technologies: The University aims to give a varied and up-to-date learning experience via use of technology in teaching. One of the most popular technologies is ULearn, the University’s flexible online learning environment. Through ULearn students can access notes, resources, discussions and assignments related to their modules of study from any computer linked to the internet.
