Overview

Iowa State University was one of the first land-grant colleges to be founded on the principles of equal opportunities, practical teaching and knowledge sharing. It is today home to approximately 29,000 students (over 3, 400 international) and offers top-ranked undergraduate and graduate. Top-notch, interdisciplinary research is carried at Iowa State in a broad range of areas and issues of international relevance. As a land-grant institution, teaching, research, and outreach are our primary missions. Iowa State University is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Learning CommunitiesCommitted to help students achieve academic success, learning communities are small groups of students who generally take two or three courses together and may also live near each other in the same residence hall. More than half of entering first-year students choose to join a learning community. With more than 70 learning communities to join, there is definitely something for every interest. Life at Iowa State

The city of Ames is a friendly and welcoming place for new students. A small college town of 52,000, it is often characterized as ''clean and green'' due to the hundreds of acres of parks, recreational facilities, and bike paths it offers, and the fact that it has no polluting industries. Ames has been consistently listed in many ranking lists including the ones for the best college towns, the most liveable small cities of the US and the best places to live in America. The city-wide bus system CyRide offers reliable fare-free transport for students. Ames is 30 minutes away from Des Moines (the capital of Iowa), and 3 hours away from Kansas City, Minneapolis and Omaha, thus our students often travel together to the ''big cities'' during their campus breaks.

WorshipAmes has dozens of churches or communities of worship, including Protestant and Catholic Christian churches, a synagogue, and an Islamic center. A Hindu temple is located in the nearby town of Madrid.

Restaurants and ethnic markets
Ames has a wide variety of ethnic restaurants and food markets, including Asian, British, Indian, Italian, Korean, Mexican, Thai, and Vietnamese cuisine. In addition to the mainstream supermarkets, Ames also has international grocery stores, organic food stores, and Asian food stores.
