Michigan State University (MSU) is an internationally renowned, major U.S. public university known for its innovative teaching, research, and outreach. MSU offers a wide range of academic opportunities and a diverse mix of social and cultural activities. MSU is a member of the Association of American Universities, the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, and the Big Ten athletic conference.

Campus

Michigan State University is located in East Lansing, just minutes away from the capital city of Lansing and in close proximity to many cities including Chicago, Detroit, Toronto and the beaches of Lake Michigan. The campus provides an inspiring environment for teaching, research and engagement.

MSU is home to more than 46,000 students pursuing over 200 programs of study offered by 17 degree-granting colleges.

International Students

Michigan State University has a large international student population of more than 5,000 students and scholars from more than 125 countries all over the world. The University’s long-standing tradition of support for international education has led to it being able to offer one of the largest sets of international student programs in the United States. Michigan State was the first major university in the United States with a dean of International programs.

Research

MSU offers excellent  research facilities and opportunities for all students, including undergraduates. Top federal research funding agencies involved with MSU include the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Notable research discoveries at MSU include:

  • Cross-fertilization of corn in the 1870s
  • Homogenization of milk in the 1930s
  • Anticancer drug cisplatin in the 1960s
  • Materials that reduce dependence on fossil fuels in the twenty-first century

Michigan State was also recently selected by the United States Department of Energy to design and establish the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams – a $550 million facility that will advance understanding of rare nuclear isotopes and the evolution of cosmos.
