Facilities and Services

Students at UMass Boston have access to the following facilities and services:
University Advising CenterThe
University Advising Center advises UMass Boston undergraduates about what steps to take in choosing a major, determining what courses to take, and arranging a class schedule. Its staff works with students from day one to help them understand their choices and make informed decisions.
UMass Boston’s academic advisors are experienced in helping each student they work with identify his or her unique academic path and stay on track. Advisors answer questions about academic policies; advise on course selections and ways to meet general education requirements; make referrals to other departments if necessary; and coach students in using the degree audit as a planning tool.
International Student ServicesThe
Office of International and Transnational Affairs (OITA) is a valuable, on-campus resource for international students studying at the university. OITA aims:
- to promote involvement of all students in significant international educational experiences in the context of global-urban communities;
- to create and maintain a stimulating and supportive academic and cultural environment for and with students and scholars;
- to support transnational academic curricula that are transdisciplinary and transcollegiate;
- to promote and enhance faculty teaching, research, and multiple forms of scholarship pertaining to global-urban matters, particularly through transdisciplinary approaches; and
- to ensure efficient and coherent coordination for campus-wide transcultural academic affairs.
The office provides services to facilitate the university’s internationalization. These include:- services for international students and scholars as well as study-abroad and exchange programs;
- services for developing transnational service-learning curricula in global-urban contexts for both undergraduate and graduate students;
- services for faculty members’ transnational and transdisciplinary professional development in teaching, research, and community engagement; and
- services for developing transnational and transdisciplinary curricula and degree programs.
Information Technology ServicesThe
Information Technology Services Division (ITSD), in collaboration with UMass Boston’s academic and business units, provides reliable and efficient technology resources, systems, services, tools, and training to the university community. ITSD supports the administrative systems of the campus; the computer labs and classroom technology; faculty, staff, and student email systems; and the university’s web services and web technologies.
AthleticsIntercollegiate athletics, intramurals, and recreation for the students, staff and faculty are the primary programs of the
UMass Boston Department of Athletics. The department supports 14 varsity teams. UMass Boston students have been named All-Americans 93 times in seven sports. The women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams have an outstanding record of achievement, including 4 team and 38 individual NCAA Division III championships.
Student HousingThe
Office of Student Housing helps prospective and currently enrolled students and other members of the university community locate suitable accommodations in Boston—including two popular housing communities next to the campus with which the university has partnerships. The office’s
housing registry database provides information about apartments available to students, faculty, and staff; and roommate-matching services are also available.
Career Services
The
Office of Career Services helps and encourages students to:
- develop and refine job hunting skills,
- participate in on-campus interviews,
- attend career services job fairs and other career-related events,
- review current job listings and read the career services job bulletin regularly,
- meet career counselors as necessary.
Student LifeThe
Office of Student Activities provides numerous services for the UMass Boston community, including opportunities for engagement outside of the classroom, student programs on and off campus, UMass Boston ID cards, ticket sales, and general university information.
Student OrganizationsThe university has more than 100
student organizations catering to the diverse tastes and interests of the students.
The
Undergraduate Student Senate is the student governance body that addresses issues of undergraduate students and their study experience at UMass Boston.
The
Graduate Student Assembly serves as the voice of graduate students at UMass Boston. The assembly is dedicated to enhancing the academic and professional development of graduate students. This includes support for graduate research and skill development.
Arts and EventsThe
Student Arts and Events Council is responsible for facilitating entertaining, enriching and educational programs that will develop an engaged campus community.
Game RoomStudents can de-stress at the university’s
game room, which provides the perfect break between classes with its video games, pool tables, and other opportunities for relaxation.
University Health Services and Counseling CenterThe
University Health Services and Counseling Center provides quality medical services and education to enhance and promote the health and wellness of the university community. Its programs are aimed at promoting optimal physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Its services are designed to increase awareness of health-related issues, help students make responsible decisions about health promotion and disease prevention, and provide quality healthcare to the UMass Boston student population. Students who have enrolled for UMB School Insurance can seek medical assistance free of cost.
