Overview

With a growing reputation for innovative research addressing complex urban issues, the University of Massachusetts Boston, metropolitan Boston’s only public university, offers its diverse student population both an intimate learning environment and the rich experience of a great American city. UMass Boston’s seven colleges and graduate schools serve nearly 15,000 students from all over the world while engaging local, national, and international constituents through academic programs, research centers, and public service activities.

UMass Boston is the second-largest campus in the University of Massachusetts system, whose five campuses constitute the largest university system in New England.

Study Programs

UMass Boston offers 81 undergraduate degree programs, 64 master’s degree and graduate certificate programs, 14 doctoral programs, and 13 undergraduate certificate programs through its College of Liberal Arts, College of Science and Mathematics, College of Management, College of Nursing and Health Science, College of Public and Community Service, Graduate College of Education, and McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies. The university conducts over 35 programs offering international culture experiences.

Accreditation

UMass Boston is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Its College of Management has AACSB accreditation, and the BS and MS programs of its College of Nursing and Health Sciences are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The Graduate College of Education is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
 
International Students
UMass Boston is the academic home of nearly 15,000 students. International students currently make up 4% of the student population; 55% of the international students are undergraduates and 45% are graduate students. In addition, UMass Boston offers a large English as a Second Language/University Preparation Program that enrolls approximately 300 students annually.

Research

UMass Boston has a long and honorable history of bringing intellectual resources to bear on issues of public concern, particularly through interdisciplinary research focused on complex urban problems. Through more than 30 research institutes and centers, students and members of the faculty pursue research on a broad range of topics that include public policy, education reforms, environmental affairs, media and society, healthcare, and much more.

International Engagement
UMass Boston’s international engagements aim to advance knowledge through partnerships. Some significant partnerships are with:

  • Hanban in China, sponsor of the Confucius Institute at UMass Boston
  • Tsinghua University—China
  • The states of Hessen and Baden-Württemberg—Germany
  • The Rennes Program—France;
  • The Verona Program—Italy
  • The University of Pretoria, the University of Western Cape, the University of Fort Hare, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and the University of Cape Town—South Africa
  • The University of Liberia—Liberia
  • Sungkyunkwan University—South Korea
  • Glasgow Caledonian University—Scotland, UK
  • The International Academy of Life Science—Germany
