UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION
International students seeking to apply to undergraduate programs at UMass Boston should submit:

  • A completed admission application, the application fee, and an undergraduate essay (at least 500 words). Student’s may use online application or download the application form.
  • If the student has never attended a college or university, or has earned fewer than 24 college or university credits, an official high school record, leaving certificate, and/or graduation examination results.
  • If the student is applying for freshman status and has studied in a high school where the courses were taught in English, an official Scholastic Aptitude Test I (SAT-I) or American College Testing (ACT) score.
  • If the student has attended one or more colleges or universities, an official transcript of the student’s academic record from each institution attended.
  • English translations of all non-English academic records validated by an official public translator.
  • If the student is not a native speaker of English, a demonstration of English language proficiency. Acceptable are:
  •  a SAT-I verbal score of 400 or higher, or
  •  a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 or higher (or 213 or higher on the computer-based TOEFL; or 79-80 or higher on the Internet-based TOEFL), or
  •  an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0 or higher.
When all admission credentials have been received and a decision to admit the applicant has been made, the university will send the applicant an official letter of admission accompanied by a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 form).

Admission is granted for a specific semester only. Applicants who meet the university’s academic admission requirements but do not demonstrate the required level of English proficiency may be offered provisional admission. Provisional admission enables students to begin in the UMass Boston English as a Second Language/University Preparation Program and, upon successful completion, matriculate into a degree program.

GRADUATE ADMISSION
International students seeking to apply to graduate programs at UMass Boston may use the university’s online application or download an application form.

General information
  • All those who hold bachelor’s degrees from institutions of recognized standing are eligible to apply for admission to graduate study at UMass Boston. Applicants must have either a four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited US college or university, or a degree which is in all respects equivalent.
  • Admission is granted only for the semester requested and cannot be guaranteed for a later date. Application details and information about application deadlines may be obtained from the Office of Graduate Admissions or be requested online. .
  • Applications for admission, with supporting documents, should be sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions.
Students may participate in graduate study at UMass Boston as:
  • Matriculated students admitted to graduate programs and fully qualified to pursue studies toward graduate degrees and certificates; or as
  • Non-degree (non-matriculated) students not admitted to graduate programs but allowed to enroll in graduate-level courses on a space-available basis. An I-20 will not be issued for students enrolled in non-degree classes. Students who hold an F1 visa status are required to be matriculated in a degree-granting program.

English Language Requirements
International applicants are required to take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System exam (IELTS).

Applicants who have received at least 4 years of education (including their undergraduate program) in Australia, Canada (except Quebec), England, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Scotland, Singapore, United States, or Wales are exempt from submitting a TOEFL or IELTS score report. All others are required to submit official score reports.
