A PhD in English studies offers many options: there are courses in literature and linguistics, as well as interdisciplinary courses with art schools and social science departments. A literature PhD allows you to research an area of interest such as the works of a particular period, genre or nation, or aspects of critical theory or rhetoric. Language courses offer academic supervision in a wide range of linguistic areas including semiotics and language change. You will undertake an extensive research project and your aim is to produce a final thesis that demonstrates original ideas.
