Founded in 1917, the University of Alaska is a public institution offering undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees through eight departments: College of Engineering and Mines, College of Liberal Arts, College of Natural Science and Mathematics, College of Rural and Community Development, School of Education, School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, School of Management and School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences. The University has seven campuses in the state, with the main campus at Fairbanks. In Fall 2008, there were 9,828 students at the Fairbanks campus.
