Founded in 1847, the University of Iowa is a comprehensive public university that consistently ranks among the nation's best public universities in terms of its commitment to teaching, research, and service. Since 1909, The University has been approved to hold membership in the Association of American Universities (AAU). AAU members are an elite group of the leading public and private research universities in the US and Canada, focused on funding for research, policy issues, and emphasis on undergraduate and graduate education.

Iowa is known around the world for its balanced commitment to the arts, sciences, and humanities. It's home to one of the nation's largest academic medical centers, the pioneering Iowa Writers' Workshop, and hundreds of options for affordable, accessible education.
