The University of Nevada, Reno, one of eight institutions within the Nevada System of Higher Education, is located in the city of Reno in northwestern Nevada. It was founded in 1874 as the State University of Nevada in Elko, Nevada, about 300 miles northeast of its present-day campus in Reno. The University has over 16,847 students enrolled at its campuses, and nine colleges which offer undergraduate and graduate majors, including a number of doctoral-level programs. The University provides students the opportunity for study inside and outside the classroom.
