Methodist leaders and Middletown citizens founded the Wesleyan University in 1831. Approximately 2,700 undergraduates, 200 graduates, as well as more than 400 part-time students study at the University. More than 900 courses are offered in 39 departments and 46 major fields. Degrees offered at the University are the Bachelor of Arts, Masters Degree in 6 disciplines, Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and PhD in 6 disciplines.
