Auckland Council Research Scholarship in Urban Economics

Study level

Postgraduate

Eligibility requirements

At the time of application candidates must be enrolled or planning to enrol in a postgraduate programme at a New Zealand university (applicants may be enrolled as full time students).

The postgraduate programme must be in the area of urban economics. Universities NZ and Auckland Council reserve the right to determine the eligibility of a particular area of study.

A thesis, dissertation, or research report must be a requirement of the postgraduate programme.

Tenure: The scholarship can be held for only one academic year. Candidates whose programmes are spread over more than one academic year are eligible for only one year’s scholarship.

AUT Doctoral Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) awards scholarships to high achieving candidates applying to an approved doctoral programme at AUT. AUT offers AUT Doctoral Scholarships in order to attract highly achieving doctoral research students to AUT and to encourage and stimulate doctoral studies in areas that enhance the University's research capability.

Applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements as stated in the Academic Calendar at the time of application. Applicants must meet the normal admission criteria for the doctoral programme.

Recipients of this scholarship will have excellent academic record, strong academic references and have demonstrated the potential for high quality research.

Scholarships are awarded on academic merit and recipients of this scholarship will normally have the equivalent of first class honours. Previous study should include research methodology paper(s) and an independent research project, including the writing of a report on that research.

The applicant’s proposed field of study must be one where the University can offer supervision.  Applicants should contact potential supervisors prior to application to confirm the availability of supervision for their proposed research.

Professional Doctorate candidates may apply at the time of submission of the PGR9.

Preference will be given to new applicants to the doctoral programme at AUT, including those currently in provisional candidature.

Tenure: All AUT Doctoral scholarships are tenable for up to three years. Support for a Professional Doctorate will be for up to two years only. 

Application details

In order for the application to be submitted applicants must complete all sections and request the required support statements. Incomplete applications will not be forwarded to the selection panel.  The following documents or statements will need to be uploaded and submitted with the AUT Doctoral Scholarship On-line Application Form;

  • Academic transcript(s) for any previous tertiary study that was completed at a university other than AUT
  • A brief C.V. (maximum three pages)

A two page proposal outlining the intended research using the template provided with the online application form. The applicant will be asked to provide the following details:            

  • Proposed Topic/Title
  • Rationale and significance of the study
  • Key Question/hypothesis/problem/issue to be investigated:
  • Design of the study; the methodology and research technique(s) to be employed in the study
  • Research benefits
  • References

Please note the proposal must be two pages only (1,000 words) plus a maximum of one page for any references. If a longer document is provided you will be asked to revise the document to meet the requirements or the approved PGR2.

An annual stipend of NZ $25,000 plus Full fees plus an annual stipend of either NZ $15,000, NZ $20,000 or NZ $25,000.

Awarua Trust Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

Scholarships are available to individuals who exhibit dedication towards the development of educational skills with a focus on the following:

  • The advancement of education in all aspects of and research into sustainable and efficient farming and agricultural practices and
  • To advance education and to relieve poverty by supporting the social and economic development, and education in New Zealand, of persons of Pacific Island and in particular Solomon Island descent.

Tenure: One Year

Application details

Scholarship applications will be considered twice a year, in July and December. All applications should be received by the Trustees by the end of June and November in each year to be considered by the Trustees. 

All letters or emails of appeal should receive an initial response within 6 weeks. Please write a letter of no more than two sides long detailing

  • the purpose and nature of the project 
  • intended beneficiaries 
  • budget
  • existing sources of finance
  • other funding applications, including those to statutory sources and the Lottery
  • whether you have previously applied to us, successfully or otherwise
  • GST Registration
