Founded in 1973, Murdoch University was the second university established in Western Australia, and the first university in Australia to introduce a flexible admissions system, making education more accessible. Today, having grown into a global centre for teaching, learning, research and industry, Murdoch University remains a place of inclusive education with a reputation for teaching excellence, as well as world-class learning and research facilities. In addition to inclusive education, Murdoch has always been associated with the environment, conservation and social justice.

Murdoch University boasts a strong global presence, with campuses in Dubai, Singapore, and Malaysia, as well as multiple locations in Western Australia. With more than 25,000 students and 2,400 staff from 90 different countries, Murdoch University is proud to be recognised for the impact that its staff and students have made in terms of innovation and research – from uncovering hidden parts of the human immune system to using virtual reality to combat climate change, or changing lives with a compassion and mindfulness-based therapy program.

Students have access to support services to help them adjust to life at university and living in Perth. Murdoch University also has more than 110 groups and clubs so students can easily meet new people and make the most of their time at Murdoch.

“I came to Murdoch University in January 2019 as a recipient of the Australia Award Africa Scholarship. Prior to coming to Australia, I was working in research, planning and data management for the National Blood Service of Ghana.

Murdoch was the only university in Australia that had all my aspirations and interests rolled up in one course. I found the health leadership aspect in particular very attractive and inspiring because I want to be a global citizen leading change in any field I work in, but especially the health sector.

My experience at Murdoch University made me realise my strengths and passion in life. My time at Murdoch has changed me. My critical and analytical thinking skills have been sharpened, and I have learned to approach problems and challenges with a scientific and evidence-based mindset.

Something I’ve learned at Murdoch, is that every single person has the potential to excel beyond their current abilities if they are willing to learn and they receive the right support. We need to encourage people and give them the opportunity to prove themselves. Also remember that every individual’s viewpoint is important, and no one should be sidelined. We might be diverse in our thoughts, but it is in this diversity that we will find our strength.

Graduate outcomes

Study options at Murdoch University, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, are developed in partnership with professional bodies and industry, so graduates enter the job market with an edge.

Murdoch University’s industry connections mean students have access to a range of work placements and internships to help them gain practical skills and sought-after experience.

Murdoch offers career development learning units in all bachelor’s degrees not already aligned with professional accreditations, industry placements or project opportunities. All students also have direct access to modules to assist with career decision making, job application writing and interview skills, as well as a careers portal to search for jobs, industry events and resources.

Murdoch University’s careers and employment service also offers workshops that help students with their resumes, one-on-one career counselling sessions, information on career fairs, and much more.

What’s new

In 2023, Murdoch University opened a new teaching and learning building, Boola Katitjin, which changes the way students learn. Boola Katitjin was crowned the best higher education building at the 2023 World Architecture Festival, and deservedly so – it’s designed with students at its heart with Australian-first technology, in addition to an inclusive and sustainable design which follows the biophilic principle of connecting occupants to nature. Boola Katitjin, a Whadjuk Noongar name meaning ‘lots of learning’, stands on country that has been a place of learning for tens of thousands of years.

Located at the centre of Murdoch University's Perth campus, the building enables students, staff and industry to meet, work and engage in its 21 large teaching and learning spaces, technology-rich labs, and immersive industry collaboration facilities. There is also informal ‘peer to peer’ learning and plenty of other student services on offer.

Boola Katitjin also provides students with a fresh space to collaborate and socialise, do group assignments and hang out with friends.
