Two students from UWA were recognised in the 2019 Premier’s Science Awards. These awards celebrate the Western Australian science community’s achievements.
Jessica Kretzmann, a PhD student from UWA’s School of Molecular Sciences, won ExxonMobil Student Scientist of the Year and Sharynne Hamilton, another PhD candidate, became the inaugural Shell Aboriginal STEM Student of the Year.
Ms Kretzmann’s research is about the evaluation and design of new gene therapies with the potential to avoid traditional chemotherapy side effects and revolutionise cancer treatment.
Ms Hamilton’s doctorate seeks to merge the social determinants of Aboriginal health with the western neurodevelopmental science for promoting a framework of healing in WA communities.
UWA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dawn Freshwater was pleased that Ms Hamilton received an award from a new category this year, the Shell Aboriginal STEM Student of the Year.
“The University is applying its very best minds, through research excellence, local and global collaboration and the power of collective intelligence, to solve the world’s grand challenges,” Professor Freshwater added.
