Jokes apart, Mathematics continues to remain a popular subject in India and the opportunities for postgraduate research in Mathematics and Statistics abroad are quite high.

As per the QS World University Subject Rankings, the top five places to study a programme in Mathematics are:

  • Harvard University
  • University of Cambridge
  • University of Oxford
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Stanford University

The MSc in Mathematics is the most popular postgraduate degree available in Mathematics. Typically offered as a full-time one year degree, the programme incorporates modules in Number Theory, Algebra, Numerical Systems and Analytical Models, Logic, Geometry, Set Theory and Probability. Based on the specialisation selected by the student, modules will vary.

A postgraduate degree in Mathematics opens up a wide variety of career options.

Costs and Entry Requirements

Typically a regular postgraduate programme in Mathematics, excluding research-oriented degrees like an MPhil or a doctorate would cost between INR 10 lakhs to INR 18 lakhs. In the USA specialised postgraduate programmes in Statistics are offered as two-year programmes by leading universities and these programmes would cost around INR 30 lakhs to INR 35 lakhs.
