Eligibility requirements

Any admitted graduate student who is a resident of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio or Wisconsin and who has completed a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited U.S. college or university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 (U.S. 4.0 scale) qualifies for this award.  This award also is available to any student (U.S. or international) who has completed a bachelor's degree or higher with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 from an accredited college or university located within Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin or Michigan.

Additionally, any admitted student who is a resident of Ontario, Canada, and who has completed a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Canada with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on the U.S. 4.0 scale also qualifies for this award.  This award also is available to any student (U.S. or international) who has completed a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited, four-year university in Ontario, Canada, and has completed a minimum of two years of study in their academic program within Ontario and has a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a U.S. 4.0 scale.

Recipients will be awarded resident tuition throughout the duration of their academic program, provided the student maintains a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Out-of-State Merit Graduate Tuition Award

Eligibility requirements

The Out-of-State Merit Graduate Tuition Award is available to all students (U.S. and international) and applies to the student's entire academic degree program, provided the student maintains a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. To qualify the student must demonstrate the following accomplishments:

A cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 on the U.S. 4.0 scale

An appropriate entrance exam score:

  • GRE (Graduate Records Exam):  GRE Verbal score of at least 157 and GRE Quantitative score of at least 152. 
  • The old GRE test equivalents are 560 Verbal and 660 Quantitative; or
  • GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test): Minimum GMAT score of 600; or
  • MAT (Miller Analogies Test): Minimum MAT score of 418.

Proof of English Proficiency (required only from non-native speakers of English)

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum score of 100 (ibt) or 600 (pbt); or
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Minimum score of 7.

International President's Award

No additional application is required for this award. Please note, any student sponsored by their home country is not eligible for this award.

Application details

To be eligible for the President's Award, you must meet the following requirements: 

  • Overall GPA of 3.3 or higher (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Minimum of 30 college credit hours completed (for incoming transfer students only)

Awards can be applied for up to four years of study if the following requirements are met: 

  • Continuous full-time enrollment (at least 12 credit hours) in fall and spring semesters; summer attendance is not required.
  • Live on-campus as a freshman and sophomore, or until the completion of 55 credit hours at CMU (Transfer students are exempt from this requirement.)
  • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
