What will I learn?

As all archaeological sites are part of a wider landscape, an understanding of landscape processes is a key skill for all archaeologists wanting to study past civilisations.

This specialisation offers a STEM-based approach to archaeology by providing a deeper understanding of landscape processes that influence the site formation, such as sedimentology, stratigraphy, palaeoclimates, geomorphological and post-depositional processes. It therefore offers a much wider appreciation of the landscape, sediments and processes than a purely archaeology-driven program, which is an advantage in this highly competitive field. You’ll gain an understanding of landscapes, palaeoclimates and the biosphere, key physical–chemical concepts across a range of environments, and you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the world around us. You’ll explain how geomorphic processes relate to, influence and form archaeological sites. You’ll apply critical thinking and problem solving to the collection, analysis and interpretation of field data. You’ll develop vital spatial skills and apply knowledge to interpret landscape processes over a range of different timelines.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have: IB points - 24-36; Scores for the International Baccalaureate (IB) are calculated based on the final aggregate result for 6 subjects, including any bonus points from Theory of Knowledge subject and Extended Essay. This must include one subject from each of Groups 1-5 (Language & Literature; Language Acquisition; Individuals and Societies; Sciences; and Mathematics), and a sixth subject from either Group 6 (Arts) or a second selection from Groups 1-5. A minimum of 3 subjects must be completed at Higher Level (HL), with the remainder at Standard Level (SL). To apply for an undergraduate program, international students will need to have completed one or more of the following academic qualifications: A recognized senior secondary school qualification or university entrance examination, such as the New South Wales Higher School Certificate (NSW HSC) or other equivalent Australian or overseas high school qualification; A recognized university Foundation course; A recognized 2 or 3-year Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree; At least one year of a university degree from a recognized institution. IELTS of 6.5 overall with minimum 6.0 in each band, or equivalent.

For international students

You may satisfy the English language requirements if you have completed: senior secondary studies equivalent to the NSW HSC; one year of Australian or comparable tertiary study in a country of qualification

IELTS of 6.5 overall with minimum 6.0 in each band, or equivalent.
