The Australian National University
Renowned for its exceptional teaching, research and small classes, The Australian National University (ANU) has the highest number of Nobel laureates among its staff and alumni than any other university in the country.
Located in the heart of the nation’s capital, Canberra, the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate students from across Australia and around the world a comprehensive portfolio of degrees – including flexible double degrees – and the support of more than 3,000 academic and professional staff.
ANU research informs students’ learning and is rated above world-standard. It addresses the important issues of today’s complex world, such as biodiversity, climate change, energy alternatives, food and regional security. Other research areas include combating disease, justice and the law, physics, engineering, humanities and the arts.
With 17,000 talented students from 100 countries, The Australian National University in Canberra offers an inclusive and vibrant learning environment.
The university recognises that its main campus in Canberra’s CBD has been a meeting place for First Nations Ngunnawal and Ngambri people for thousands of years. The capital is a global and diverse city buzzing with year-round festivals and world-class arts, culture and entertainment. Fresh air, mountains, bike paths and the locals’ commitment to sustainability make it a healthy and vibrant student city.
ANU is a member of the Group of Eight – and the only Australian member of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU).

ANU students work closely with academics who are experts in their field, some of whom have written their textbooks, and develop skills through unique internships enabled by the university’s relationships with national policymakers, industry and partners.
As graduates they are ranked the most employable in Australia (Times Higher Education 2023). Among the university’s notable alumni are former Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, Lieutenant General David Morrison, Consul-General in New York, Nick Minchin, Ann Gallagher (who has served as Special Advisor to Mary Robinson, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights) and Muhamad Chatib Basri, Indonesia's former Minister of Finance.
Students at ANU study work-integrated learning courses that give them opportunities to apply what they have learned during their studies in real-world settings while earning credit towards their degree.
They have regular opportunities to meet and gain work experience in industry, community and research settings. Global employers frequently visit campus. These include companies like Canva, KPMG, Macquarie, Jardines, Goldman Sachs, Quantium, Infosys, the Department of Defence, Services Australia and Teach for Australia, Ernst & Young, Deloitte and Boston Consulting Group.
ANU colleges also lead short programs that get students out of the classroom and into the field overseas for between two and six weeks. Students enrol in short programs as they would a course; these can take them to destinations in the Asia-Pacific region, such as Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Japan, Samoa, Fiji, Hawaii and Mongolia.
Once they complete their degree at ANU, international students become eligible to apply for the Post Study Work stream of the Australian Temporary Graduate Visa. The visa lets them live and work in Australia for 2–4 years, depending on the level of their degree.
ANU is a vibrant and contemporary university with new developments and innovations helping to constantly develop the student experience on campus.
The Australian National University’s (ANU) Research School of Management (RSM) has appointed Samira Nazar as a lecturer in Entrepreneurship.
Samira’s teaching is informed by her qualitative research of marginalised entrepreneurs in fragile contexts, most recently women entrepreneurs in Afghanistan.
Before arriving at ANU, Samira undertook her PhD at the University of Queensland's Business School, where she also taught postgraduate courses and was part of research projects in entrepreneurship, innovation, strategy and sustainability. Prior to that she completed a master’s in business, majoring in social impact and sustainability, as well as a graduate diploma in technology and innovation management.
She discusses her area of research and teaching expertise as well as her plans to develop the next generation of entrepreneurs.

ANU offers academically outstanding students a range of internal and external scholarships that can help support and encourage them during their studies. These recognise academic achievement and unique challenges and can help cover tuition and living expenses.
Students can learn more about the application process on the university’s website. The criteria varies for each scholarship opportunity, so it’s important students find those that are best suited to them, and make their application early where necessary. Some opportunities may not require an application to be submitted, and students may be automatically assessed.
The following scholarships are just some of those available to international students.
This scholarship provides academically outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students with a 25 or 50 percent reduction in tuition fees, depending on their region, over the term of their degree program.
In association with the China Scholarship Council (CSC), ANU is now offering opportunities to high-quality research students and scholars from China.
Whether applying as a domestic or international student, students will need to:
Because the courses have different requirements, students are advised to research their chosen subject as soon as they can, to ensure they can meet the requirements for their chosen program. Some may have further requirements beyond academic achievement, including portfolios of existing work.
Students’ qualifications must meet the university’s minimum admission requirements for:
For postgraduate study, students will need to have:
The Australian National University’s focus is on providing high-quality teaching and student experiences while producing excellent research that translates into meaningful products and services. Its degrees are delivered through seven academic colleges.
Many ANU alumni attribute their career success to the collaborative relationships they developed with their teachers and the opportunities they took up during their studies which helped them build networks, such as workplace internships and student exchanges.
ANU research is rated above world-standard (Excellence in Research for Australia report 2019). It addresses the important issues, from biodiversity, climate change, energy alternatives, food and regional security to combating disease, regulation, justice and the law, physics, engineering, humanities and the arts.
Work-integrated learning courses give ANU students opportunities to apply what they have learned during their studies in real-world settings while earning credit towards their degree. The university offers these and other skills development programs through its colleges and international partnerships.
ANU offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in:
These programs include master’s degrees in research.
Most of the courses at ANU are full-time and require students to learn in person, but there are some options available for students who wish to study part-time or who want to learn remotely. Remote courses may still require some presence at the university for enrolment or upon graduation.
Each department at the university is led by experts in the field, and given the appropriate resources needed to provide an excellent education to all students enrolled. Students will learn using industry-grade materials, preparing them for the next steps in their chosen career path.
PhD students at ANU can look forward to being part of a dynamic research community and receiving excellent support from supervisors who are experts in their fields.
