What will I learn?

The Mathematics Honours specialisation is intended for students who have a foundational knowledge of the field and are interested in undertaking an independent research project under the direction of a supervisor. The Honours specialisation is usually taken full time for two consecutive semesters and includes research training, in-depth analysis of contemporary topics, and a substantial research project culminating in the production of a thesis. The Honours specialisation is a solid foundation in the basics of research and can provide either a pathway to a PhD or entry to careers in finance, education, public service, or technology.Learning OutcomesPlan and engage in an independent and sustained critical investigation of a chosen research topic to generate new knowledge in an area of mathematics.Systematically evaluate relevant theory and concepts in mathematics, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions.Demonstrate capacity for mathematical reasoning through analysing, proving, and explaining concepts from the chosen research area.

Entry requirements

For international students

An AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences degree or equivalent completed within the last two years.with a weighted average mark equivalent to an ANU 70 per cent calculated from the 36 units ie 0.75 EFTSL of mathematics courses excluding 1000-level courses ie introductory undergraduate courses with the highest marks.Completion of at least eight 2000 and 3000-level courses in the subject area mathematics with at least four 3000-level courses or equivalent.With the written approval of an identified supervisor for the research project.
