Our extensive range of specialist fields enables you to develop your interdisciplinary scientific knowledge and practical skills, while pursuing studies that suit your interests and ambitions.

You also have the option to combine your scientific expertise with skills from a broad range of study areas, including languages, communication and design, to broaden your skill set or follow your interests beyond science.

You'll learn how to work confidently in a range of labs, including wet, dry and clinical labs, PC2 and PC3 labs, and animal diagnostic, operating and skills-training labs.

Some majors offer fieldwork opportunities in locations such as the Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island, national parks and outback Queensland. Plus you'll have the chance to gain relevant, real-world experience through employability and work-integrated learning such as internships, industry placements, research projects and international study.

Microbiology

Microbiology is at the forefront of protection against infectious diseases.

In this major, you'll study the diversity of microorganisms, the immune system, microbial virulence, disease states and the ways in which organisms respond to infection.

You'll learn how vaccines protect animals and humans from infectious diseases, and discover the latest advances in vaccine development from lecturers who are globally recognised experts.

Focusing on the key areas of immunology, virology, parasitology, environmental microbiology, microbial biotechnology and microbial genomics, you'll study bacterial, fungal and viral infections and apply your knowledge in weekly laboratory practicals.

You'll confidently use the specialist biomedical and molecular techniques required to diagnose and characterise infectious microbes and to develop new diagnostics. Problem-based scenarios will enhance your analytical, research and communication skills.

This major can lead to challenging and rewarding career opportunities within universities and biotechnology companies, and medical and veterinary institutes, along with roles in forensics, biosecurity and quarantine.

Alternatively, kickstart your career in research by progressing into a research-based honours degree.

IB score varies based on the subject taken. International Baccalaureate Diploma Scores: Minimum of 26 - 42. To be offered a place in an undergraduate program, you need to have successfully completed Queensland Year 12, or a qualification equivalent to Queensland Year 12, with the required minimum entry score for the program you're interested in studying. English Language Scores: IELTS: Overall Band Score of 6.5 AND a minimum score of 6 in each sub-band of Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening; TOEFL (Internet-Based-iBT): Overall score 87 with a Writing score of 21 and Reading, Speaking and Listening scores of 19; TOEFL (Paper-based): Overall score of 570 and a minimum score of 5.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE) and 54 in Listening and Reading; PTE: Overall score of 64 with 60 in each communicative skills section; CAE/CPE: Overall Cambridge English Scale (CES) score of 176 with a minimum score of 169 in each skill; BE: A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all four macro skills.

For international students
