What will I learn?

Speech pathologists recognise the importance of communication and swallowing as activities that enable people to participate fully in their daily lives. They work with individuals, groups, families, and communities to support the development, rehabilitation and maintenance of effective communication and swallowing skills across the lifespan.

Our speech pathology program will prepare you to assess and diagnose difficulties with speech, language, voice, fluency, multi-modal communication and swallowing, and enable you to provide intervention and support that is person-centred, culturally-sensitive and evidence-based. You’ll recognise the dignity of the human person and your responsibility towards the common good, and have opportunities to put your values, knowledge and skills into action with professional practice and community engagement activities in Australia and overseas.

Professional experience

Work placement

Students in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology undertake a range of professional practice placements to ensure they meet Speech Pathology Australia's graduate entry competency with regard to the management of disorders of communication and swallowing.

As part of your course, you will be placed in a range of organisations to integrate the theory you learn with practical workplace experiences (placements). As part of your enrolment, you must complete the Faculty of Health Sciences pre-placement requirements. To ensure you meet these requirements you need to start as soon as possible. Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants must have minimum aggregate score of 7. Ranks on the GCE are calculated on the basis that at the Advanced Level (A2): A=6, A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, and must include results in minimum of two advanced Level (A2) and up to two (2) at Advanced Subsidiary Level (AS) subjects. AS Level subject is half of that assigned at Advanced Level (A2) – A=3, A=2.5, B=2, C=1.5, D=1, E=0.5. Subjects at Advanced Level (A2) must be taken in the same academic year. AS Level subjects may be taken in the same or previous academic year. A subject taken at both AS Level and Advanced Level is only counted once for aggregate score. Applicants must have must have the equivalent of an Australian Year 12 Certificate. English Language Requirements: Overall IELTS score of 6.0 (with an individual score of 6.0 in writing and speaking; 5.5 in listening and reading); Pearson Test of English (PTE): 50 with a minimum of 50 in writing and speaking and a minimum of 42 in reading and listening; Test of English as a Foreign Language - Academic (TOEFL): Internet based total of 60: minimum 21 in writing, 18 in speaking, 8 in reading and 7 in listening; ACU English Language Test: C (60-64%); Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): Overall CAE of 169 (Minimum score of 169 in writing and speaking and 162 in listening and reading).

For international students

Applicants require the equivalent of an Australian Year 12 Certificate, including studies in biology, chemistry or physics.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Overall score: 8.0; Individual score of: 8.0 in all tests

Pearson Test of English (PTE): 65 with a minimum of 65 in all four communicative skills

Test of English as a Foreign Language - Academic (TOEFL): Internet based total of 110: minimum 30 writing, 26 in speaking, 29 in reading, and 28 in listening

ACU English Language Test: A (75-100%)

Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): Overall CAE score of 185 Individual score of 185 in all test.
