The skills and knowledge gained from this qualification will empower you to work in a variety of position in the community and enrich the lives of individuals with varied needs. You can select to work in a variety of services such as disability, aged care, social housing, youth, disadvantaged diverse groups or aboriginal support.

This qualification enables students to assist clients in accessing their community, or offering assistance to clients with complex needs while maintaining a dignified and independent lifestyle. Our experienced trainer will guide you through a number of techniques in order to provide a client with a holistic approach to well-being. At the end of the course, students are required to complete 200 hours of work placement, which will provide students with valuable practical experience and to build upon the skills and knowledge learnt throughout the course.

In this course you will learn how to:

  • Communicate effectively with and advocate on behalf of clients
  • Apply counselling techniques
  • Work effectively with diverse clients on one-on-one or in groups
  • Apply all aspects of case management
  • Implement community development strategies
  • Understand the impacts of sociological factors on clients

Job Role:

At this level, workers have specialised skills in community services and work autonomously under broad directions from senior management. Workers are usually providing direct support to individuals or groups of individuals. Workers may also have responsibility for the supervision of other workers and volunteers and/or case management; roles may provide support, recruitment, performance management, risk management, advocacy or interventions to individuals, groups or communities and range from working under the direction and supervision of others to managing the programs and services themselves.

Articulation

Upon completion of Certificate III in Disability, students can continue to study Certificate IV in Aged Care followed by Bachelor of Science (Nursing) from Edith Cowan University.

Entry requirement for international students

Completion of Year 11 or equivalent with upper immediate level of English, Minimum Academic IELTS 5.5 (no band less than 5.0) or pass the Institute’s literacy test. No prior work experience is required in this field.
